John 10:27 says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
Ok, so the scriptures tell us that if we are a child of God we will hear His voice and follow Him.
But, how do we know what God’s voice sounds like? In the Bible God spoke to his people in many different ways. God spoke to Moses through a burning bush, he spoke to Balaam through a donkey, and he spoke to Samuel in a loud audible voice.
God STILL speaks to us all in unique ways. The Lord speaks to each of us in a way we can personally understand.
My daughter Grace just celebrated her 3rd birthday recently. Ever ever since Grace was born the Lord impressed on my heart to specifically pray that Jesus would hold her hand in times of fear or loneliness. This prayer always seemed a bit odd to those around me, but I kept praying this prayer out of faith in what the Lord had spoken to me. I’ve prayed this prayer for Grace 3 years now not truly understanding why I was praying it. Does God really hold a child’s hand in a way they can feel? I assumed God must because He speaks to us in a way only we can understand, and children certainly don’t understand the theology of what it is to know Christ. But I didn’t know for sure because I didn’t have scriptural proof.
Well, 2 weeks ago Grace told me that she wanted to ask Jesus into her heart! She prayed the sinner’s prayer out loud. Grace was so excited she wanted to tell EVERYONE! She called her Daddy at work, Grandparents and Uncles at home, and with enthusiasm declaired, “Jesus is in my HEART!”
I was in awe of not only the miracle the Lord has done in my daughters heart but the evidence in the changes in her behavior.
It was at this moment I realized that the Lord must have revealed Himself to Grace in a tangible way just as I had prayed all these years. I knew this becuase Jesus is so real to Grace!
A couple days after Grace accepted Christ, I was feeling discouraged and asked the Lord to show me that He speaks to my heart too! I asked him to show me that I do hear His voice.
Then I read this:
Samuel 3:10
Now The Lord came and stood and called as at other times, Samuel! Samuel!
The commentary says: The Lord came and stood, these words reflect Samuel’s VERY REAL sense of God’s presence. This appears to have been a theophany, a VISIBLE appearance of God, as in Gen 12:7.
WOW Samuel was a very young boy and here is proof that the Lord spoke to this little boy in a tangible and audible way by standing near him and calling his name!
Now I had the scriptural proof that Jesus does speak to children in a tangible way i.e. holding Grace’s hand!
I also got my prayer answered that morning; the Lord HAD spoken to me when He asked me to pray that God would hold Grace hand. This act of faith DIDN’T come out of thin air, it was a direct command from God to ME! WOW! It was awesome to see this sequence of events come full circle and understand just a little bit better how God speaks to us!
