We have all been raised with milk from a young age, but do we need to continue drinking it as adults? And what are alternatives for our calcium needs?
What are the problems with the milk we buy in stores?
The milk that we pick up off a shelf in the grocery store has gone through pasteurization process in which many vitamins and minerals are lost, amino acides are altered and enzymes are destroyed, even those that are good for us.
Why is raw milk better for us? Raw milk is a great resource of many of the proteins, vitamins, and enzymes that our bodies need. Raw milk is a complete protein meaning that it contains all the essential amino acids. Also, raw milk contains lactobacilli bacteria which aids in digestion of lactose, if this was not lost during the pasteurization process then many people who are lactose intolerant would be able to drink milk.
Am I lactose-intolerant? Most people stop producing lactase, which is needed to break down the milk sugar lactose, between the ages of 2 and 5. Because our bodies cannot digest the sugars they sit in the intestines and ferment. The symptoms for lactose intolerance are gas, abdominal cramps/pains, diarrhea, bloating, and sometimes nausea.
What are other aternatives to fulfill our calcium needs? Raw greens such as kale, broccoli and bok choy, canned sardines, hemp milk, and almonds are all great alternatives. (1000-1300 mg needed each day depending on age)
